ABOUT THE INITIATION OF THE UNESCO MEDAL In accordance with a request from the International Commission for the Development of EOLSS Theme "Nanoscience and Nanotechnologies", Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director-General, decided on 1st March, 2010 to initiate the UNESCO medal entitled "Contribution to development of nanoscience and nanotechnologies" and authorized the use of the UNESCO logo and name for the medal, along with the confiration for the design and the statute of the medal. EXTRACTS FROM THE MEDAL STATUTE UNESCO medal "Contribution to development of nanoscience and nanotechnologies" UNESCO medal "Contribution to development of nanoscience and nanotechnologies" was established on the basis of creation of UNESCO-EOLSS theme on "Nanoscience and nanotechnologies" within the EOLSS series... The medal represents a coiled spiral on its face side; at the center: semiabstract sign "Nanoscience and nanotechnologies"; in the right top corner of the spiral: text "Paris 2009" and UNESCO emblem; at the reverse: UNESCO emblem at the center; inscription in English "For contribution to development of nanoscience and nanotechnologies" on both sides. UNESCO medal "Contribution to development of nanoscience and nanotechnologies" is adjudged by UNESCO Director General to both various representatives of nanoscience and nanotechnologies and scientific and public agencies, as well as politicians that contributed to their development in the spirit of priority tasks of UNESCO. Adjudgement of the medal is accompanied by investing a UNESCO diploma... Among the laureates of UNESCO medal «Contribution to development of nanoscience and nanotechnologies», there are: Nobel laureates Zhores Alferov (Russia) and Isamu Akasaki (Japan); presidents of academies of science – Chunli Bai (China) and Vladimir Fortov (Russia); Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA); outstanding scientists from Russia, USA, China, Japan, United Kingdom, Germany, France, South Africa, Republic of Korea, Iran, Kenya, Azerbaijan, Ukraine. The Sixth Award Ceremony of the UNESCO Medal "Contribution to Development of Nanoscience and Nanotechnologies" was held on October 11, 2016 at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. For the first time, two institutions of higher education were awarded: the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, USA) and the St Petersburg State University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics (ITMO University, Russian Federation). The recipients of the UNESCO Medal were also: the Editor-in-Chief of EOLSS and co-Chairman of the Joint Committee with UNESCO, Doctor D. Al Gobaisi (UAE), Distinguished Professor at Korea University Jin Jung-Il (South Korea), Professor at University of Saint-Andrew J.F. Scott (United Kingdom), First Vice-President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine A.G. Naumovets (Ukraine). |
